About this tool

Create a Chicago Style formatted citation for an online journal article by filling in as many boxes as you can. In some cases, information may not be available. If so, leave those fields blank.

Format for Online Journal: full name of author(s), article title, journal title, and issue information. Issue information refers to volume, issue number, month, year, and page numbers. For online works, retrieval information and the date of access are also included.

This Wizard follows the seventeenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, issued in 2017.

Author's names in Chicago Style are cited last name first followed by the first name and an initial. Do not add punctuation to initials--the Wizard does that for you as needed.

Enter available information in this form: Volume number, Issue number (year): pages. For example: 65, no. 2):154-163 The wizard adds a period at the end.

Edition help

If edition information is available, enter the number and abbreviate it, e.g., second = 2nd (the wizard adds ed. for you). Otherwise leave the field blank.

Date accessed help

Leave this blank if the information you are citing was accessed today. Otherwise use this date format: Year Month Day or edit the result after pasting into your paper. Abbreviate the Month to the first three characters.

Page number(s) help

Page Numbers

Enter page numbers, using a hyphen but no other punctuation: e.g., 34-46
