How to play Needle and Haystack

Solve each Search Challenge using Google or another search engine. Hints are provided that can guide the search process. Each time an incorrect answer is entered, another hint is provided and a point is deducted.

Scores are displayed on each page.

Each Challenge is worth up to 5 points. There are four Challenges in this series. A mastery goal is to use as few hints as possible; another is to learn from mistakes.

Needle and Haystack Mastery Challenges

Searching online can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Search engines certainly make the task easier, but they don't take thinking out of the process. Use these guided searches to improve your Search Box Fluency.

A score of 20 is perfect, but it's more likely you will earn closer to a total of 4 points because of the 1 in 5 Rule. The goal of search mastery is to match the keywords the information author used and you have a 1 in 5 chance of doing that.
