Teaching the Basics

Two Ways to Search Online: QUERY and browse

Two Ways to Search: Search Engine, Browsing

Use a Search Engine when

  • You know keywords for the search

Browse (use a Subject Directory) when

  • You need to check out a specific page (search results)
  • You have clear links to follow (homing in)
  • You are looking for ideas (brainstorming) and do not need a specific page
  • Browse a Subject Directory if you don't know any effective keywords for searching
  • You need to know more information about the page (e.g., the name of the author, publisher, date and other evidence to evaluate)
