About this tool

Create an MLA formatted citation for an electronic Book by filling in as many boxes as you can. A different format is used for a print Book. In some cases, information may not be available. If so, leave those fields blank.

The format for citing an electronic Book in MLA style is:

Author's Last Name, First Name. Title of Book: Subtitle (if any). Edition (if given). Publisher, Year. Name of Database, or URL (if a Website), Accessed date.

Citing an Editor

Check this box if this is an anthology or collection edited by one or more editors. If this is a work edited by a person other than the author, list the author as usual and do not check this box. Manually add the editor to the finished citation preceded by: Edited by

Example 1

    Bronte, Charlotte. Jane Eyre. Edited by Margaret Smith, Oxford UP, 1998.

If the work cited is one selection of an edited collection or anthology, or a chapter of a book, list the author as usual and do not check this box. Manually add the editor to the finished citation as shown in Example 2:

*Add pages to the end of the citation when referring to a chapter in the book.

Citing the Title

Enter the Book title. If there is a subtitle, include it following a colon. The Wizard will italicize the citation.

1st edition is not cited. Abbreviate edition as ed (the wizard will add the punctuation)

Year of Publication

If the book was printed prior to 1900, has versions that are different in one country than in another, or if it is considered a rare book, include the City the book was published in as follows:

Example, insert a comma after the date only in this case:

    1889, London

Date formatting

Start with the date (no punctuation) abbreviate the Month followed by the year.

Examples:
